On Friday May 4, 2007, pole walker Peter Oliver will at the age of 59yrs old attempt a 24-hour non-stop pole walk around a 20klm loop of undulating terrain of hills and flats on the tropical North Coast of Australia. This will be the culmination of an intensive training programme that started last November 2006.
The inspiration of the 24-hour walk came from Peter's pole walking mentor and trainer Mike "Walking Wizard" Gates. Mike and his son Jay have both successfully undertaken 24-hour and 36-hour non-stop pole walking challenges, establishing two new world records at that time for the sport on the way; as well as completing an Ultra Pole Walk Challenge of successfully completing just over 2000 Klms in 22 days through the countryside of Australia in May 2004.
In the course of his training program, Peter has lost 30kg and aims to lose several more before he walks. He reckons pole walking "is the best all-round workout you can get," and says the sport has played a major role in his weight loss.He walks 3-4 times a week recreationally, when not in training.
Peter's training regime has included intensive pole walking sessions with his mentor, building up from three hours to six, eight,12 and 14 hours, peaking at 18 hours two weeks before his event. He also does weight training circuitsin the gym twice a week, along with daily stretches and regular massages.
All the funds raised from individual and corporate sponsorship of this important community event will go to aid the Pre-term Infants and Parents Association (PIPA), a support network for premature babies and their families, and the Australian Lions Children's Mobility Foundation, aiding disable children to live the dream of walking. Both Mike and Peter strongly beleive every child is entitled to walk.
